Plans are underway to transition the Waste Diversion Fund into a Community Circular Economy Fund, broadening the scope of the current funding program for non-profit organizations that operate reuse programs to include circular economy initiatives. A proposal is being presented to the Council for approval in Q4 2024.
A mattress recycling program is being researched to evaluate its costs. This program aims to recycle and repurpose the materials used in mattresses, further supporting the principles of the circular economy.
The new Community Circular Economy Fund was created to support circular economy initiatives from non-profits, community groups and organizations (Council Report No. PW-06-25).
A mattress recycling pilot program, to recycle mattresses and box springs at the Halton Waste Management Site (HWMS) is in the planning and development stages, with a target start of Spring 2026.
